Kicking and Screaming

A few months ago (actually, it was a year ago), I made a plan to meet a friend at the park so my granddaughters could play. I packed snacks and water bottles and told the girls to get their shoes on. I don’t venture out of the house too often by myself with both girls; it overwhelms me a little. However, since my friend was meeting me, I decided to go ahead and plan this little adventure for “Sweets” and “Pattycakes.”

After getting Pattycakes all strapped into her carseat, I helped Sweets into the car. As I tried to buckle her into her seat, she began to throw a little fit! She cried, screamed, and straightened her body so I couldn’t get her into her seat. No matter what I said, she did not want to get into her seat. After texting my friend that I was going to be late, I finally convinced her to get into the seat and let me buckle her in. After all, we were going on a grand adventure!

Isn’t that exactly what we do? God has a plan for us, but we kick and scream because we don’t want to do it! As I was doing the homework for my Rooted community group this week, God showed me how much I have been kicking and screaming by reminding me of this story. You see, I had planned a blog using this story at the time it happened. However, I have put off writing it. I don’t know why. I just straightened out my legs and wouldn’t allow the Lord to buckle me into my seat for this great adventure He has planned.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Doesn’t that excite you? God created you for a very specific purpose! As I read all the daily devotions about serving God and using our gifts, He reminded me that He has given me a set of gifts to use for His glory. He’s also given me several projects to write…a suspense/mystery novel, a parenting guide, a marriage handbook for small or large groups, a letter to young wives. Why haven’t I written them yet? I don’t know! Perhaps I’m lazy. Or scared. Or busy. Or just plain procrastinating. Whatever it is, I need to get about the business of doing the good works God prepared in advance for me to do.

Here I am, Lord. Buckle me into my carseat with my laptop and let’s go on this adventure together!
